The Story of Brian "Fitz" FitzPatrick
As told to us by Paul Hooson and Brian's family
with poetry by Brian

Brian "Fitz" FitzPatrick was a gifted, loving man, who never let his illness get in the way of helping others find the best in life through humour and good spirits.

Fitz grew up in Victoria in the 50's and 60's, and was a vital part of the theatre, literary and visual arts community there throughout his adolescence. He was one of my best friends, always ready with a smile and an outrageous point of view. In those days it took a lot of courage to be a flamboyant male in a jock society, but he did it with such flair and conviction that he was well loved by everyone. We both graduated from Oak Bay High School in 1966, and most of his family still resides in Victoria.

As you can see from his mother's note, placing Brian's name on the Memorial means a great deal to the family, as a way to validate and honour his life, brief though it was. He was a wonderful human being, and we all still miss him dearly.

Dear Paul

I was deeply touched by your thoughtful suggestion that Brian's name should be included in the AIDS Memorial.

I have spoken to Shannon, David and Nancy and we all think it is a wonderful idea, and hope that we will be able to join you when the memorial is unveiled.

Thank you for your kind thought. My best wishes to you and your family.

Beverly FitzPatrick

THE TREE

For ages now this tree has stood
Dogs have fouled its bark
Lovers degraded its shade
Striving for meaning
In frenzied copulation
Hawks have abused its shelter
Hidden from others in greed
Their beaks still dripping
Cannibal blood
And once
Men drunk with hate
Boldened by drink
Watched a Negro dance
On a rope from its powerless branches.

Now
Without its leafy cover
Stripped of its glory
Denuded to the biting snow
Why does it persist?
Shamed
And violated
Why fight to live?

Its spirit lies beneath the world
Down
In the warm earth
In blinding darkness
Languidly sipping loves bouquet
The roots
Know not of hate.
